Dutch Reformed Church Arniston 1933

The erection of the Dutch Reformed Church [Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk] also known as the MUNUS church was mostly achieved by a generous donation of R600,00 by Ms Bettie du Toit of the farm Klipbank, district Protem.

Fund raising from church services and bazaars also contributed to the building project.  Building operations commenced during June 1933 and was finalized at a cost of R611,76.

On 21 June 1933 the unveiling of the foundation stone was made by Ms Jan du Toit.  The congregation donated chairs, books and tables.  The inauguration of the church was set for the 27th September 1933 and a bazaar formed part of the festivities, the proceeds of which were also contributed to the building fund.

The grounds were fenced in 1984 and on 16 January 1949 the electric lights switched on.  During 1981 gas lighting was installed.   During the years the congregation generously supported the building, grounds and interior by donations and free service rendering.   A kitchen was added during 1955 and further donations secured the appliances and furniture.

In 1967, the Bredasdorp Agricultural Co-op donated 130 chairs, which were removed from the Napier bioscope, for further use by the church.    It was found that the church space was inadequate and during 1974 a decision was taken to investigate the enlargement thereof.

This was found to be unpractical.   In 1977 renovations to the interior, exterior and roof was made.   A further wall enclosure was also added.  The church also served as a function venue and regular church services were held.
